FIFO
Fly-in, fly-out. A system where employees spend a set period working on remote sites, then fly home (generally to Perth) for their breaks. This system is in place for employees at the West Angelas, Hope Downs, Marandoo, Brockman and Nammuldi and Yandicoogina sites.
HI
Hamersley Iron, established in 1966, first shipped iron ore from the Pilbara to Japan in August 1966. It now ships over 90 million tonnes of iron ore each year from eight mines. Hamersley Iron is wholly owned by Rio Tinto.
HOP
Home Ownership Plan, which was offered by Hamersley Iron to its employees some years ago. This is no longer available to employees. It has been replaced by the Rio Tinto North West Rental Scheme (for inland towns) and the Rio Tinto North West Rental/Reimbursement Scheme (for coastal towns).
NORMALISATION
When Rio Tinto built towns within the Shires of Roebourne and Ashburton, it was responsible for town management, maintenance and development. During the 1980s, a process of normalisation occurred where by these responsibilities were transferred to the State Government and relevant local government. However, the transfer of accountabilities for assets and services varies from town to town and in many instances is incomplete. The company currently retains responsibility for township utilities and provides in-kind maintenance and management services in Dampier, Wickham, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica.

RRIA
Robe River Iron Associates, now a member of Rio Tinto group, operates two open pit iron ore mines, the Mesa J near Pannawonica and the West Angelas, further inland. Its first iron ore shipment left Cape Lambert in October 1972 and it now exports over 50 million tonnes each year. It operates as a joint venture between Rio Tinto (53 per cent), Japanese trading company Mitsui and two Japanese steel companies, Sumitomo Metal Industries and Nippon Steel Corporation.

Expansion Projects, a business unit of Rio Tinto Iron Ore, manages the portfolio of major expansion activities and studies.
Expansion Projects' role is to take a project from conceptual level, through pre-feasibility and feasibility phases and upon approval, construct and commission the project.
Expansion Projects' works closely with RTIO operations, but is managed independently to minimise the impact on operations during project study and implementation phases of expansion.
